Everything we do, we do for our region.
Anglian Water is the largest water and water recycling company in England and Wales by geographic area. We supply water and water recycling services to around 7 million people, covering 14 counties across the East of England, and Hartlepool.
We employ around 6,000 people – and work alongside 3,000 alliance partners and contractors – to operate and maintain 38,996km of water mains. And we operate a staggering 76,355km of sewers: laid end-to-end, that’s almost twice around the world!
The region we serve
The region we serve in the East of England spans from Grimsby in the north to Southend-on-Sea in the south; and from Northampton and Milton Keynes in the west to Lowestoft and Great Yarmouth in the east. It’s home to three of the fastest-growing cities in the UK – Cambridge, Milton Keynes and Peterborough. We also serve Hartlepool on the North Sea coast.
Our region is economically vibrant, with 75% of land classified as agricultural and many thriving industries such as, manufacturing, pharmaceutical, technology and food production. And we’re home to an exciting burgeoning green energy industry, which includes the UK’s largest opportunity for decarbonisation in the Humber region and the opportunity for offshore wind in Norfolk and Suffolk.
Our region faces particular challenges in relation to climate change, nature and the environment, which is why our Purpose – to bring environmental and social prosperity to the region we serve through our commitment to Love Every Drop – is so important.
Investing for today and for the future
Over the next 20 years, it’s predicted that over 700,000 more people will move into our region. Water is critical to enabling this growth in a sustainable way. This means the work we do needs to ensure we can serve customers today, while building resilience for the future.
Since privatisation in 1989, we’ve invested over £16.9 billion in improvements across our region. Our Business Plan for 2025-2030 includes further investment worth £11 billion, to maintain our network for customers today, while addressing the challenges faced in the region we serve, to secure water supplies for generations to come.
This investment will not only ensure we build resilience into our existing network, it will also support essential growth – from hundreds of kilometers of interconnecting pipelines to move water around our region to where it is needed most, to investing in large-scale infrastructure such as the two new proposed reservoirs, one in the Fens and another in Lincolnshire.
£4 billion of our plan is focused on delivering environmental enhancements – including schemes to improve resilience to the risks of drought and flood and ecological improvements.
How we work
We are constantly striving to be the best company we can be: one that makes a real and meaningful impact for our customers, communities, colleagues and the environment.
We’ve rolled out over one million smart meters to help customers understand their water use and save money on their bills. We are also industry leaders when it comes to leakage. We actually pump less water into supply now that we did in 1989, despite having 26% more properties in the region!
We are always exploring new ways to do more for our customers. This has seen us continually exceed our targets on supporting vulnerable customers and launch new support packages, such as our new Medical Needs Discount – an industry first – to provide direct financial aid to those with specific medical needs with a high water dependency.
We build trust with our local communities by engaging in activities that matter to them. Whether it’s holding events to bring local voices into our plans, engaging with schools or colleges, to attending jobs fairs.
We do the right thing. This includes maintaining a focus on keeping everyone – our customers, people and partners – safer every day. And we make sure everyone feels welcome and supported: we’re an inclusive employer – committed to the Social Mobility Pledge; we're a Disability Confident employer; and we hold the Armed Forces Covenant Gold award for employing ex-service personnel.
External recognition and accreditation
We were the first water company to set ambitious targets for reducing both capital and operational carbon. We’re on track to reduce the carbon in building and maintainin our assets by 70 per cent (against a 2010 baseline and to reach net zero carbon by 2030.
We're the only company in our industry to achieve ISO standards in quality, environment and health and safety. And, we’ve been recognised by RoSPA (Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents) for 18 consecutive years, receiving gold medal awards for the last eight years.
We won Water Company of the Year at the 2023 Water Industry Awards. And in 2024, we were awarded the Net Zero Carbon Initiative, Energy in Water Initiative, Health and Safety Initiative and Wastewater Innovation of the Year.
