If you think you have a leak (either because we’ve dropped you a line to say your smart meter’s spotted something unusual about your water use, or because your bill has gone up unexpectedly), it’s important to find out fast. Not only do leaks waste water, but left unfixed, they can add up to another £300 to your yearly water bill and could be causing unseen damage to your property.
We know a leak can sound worrying, but we're here to help you find and fix it quickly. It could be something as simple as a constantly dripping tap or a leaky loo. Just take a look below at our handy video or step-by-step guide to narrow down where your leak could be.
Don’t have a smart meter? Take a look here to see how to do some simple checks to find your leak.
Checking for leaks with your smart meter
*if your meter doesn’t quite look like the one in the video there’s no need to worry, here are the other smart meters that you might have
The most likely location for a leak is inside your home. That’s why checking your fixtures and appliances is a great place to start (the most likely culprits being dual flush toilets). If your water meter’s inside your home, then any potential leak will definitely be inside too.
Top tip: We already collect hourly readings to help us spot if you have a leak at home, and it's easy for you make sure you can see this breakdown too. Simply log into MyAccount and ‘View my water usage’ then on the usage section you'll be able to filter and see your hourly water use.
What happens after the leak’s fixed?
Your smart meter will spot when the leak’s been fixed, so you don’t need to let us know when it’s done. We'll then drop you a line to say your usage has gone back to normal. You can also log into MyAccount to reassure yourself. We’ll also tell you how you can claim for a leakage allowance.
