Anglian Water has completed a £20m investment across ten projects in their region, providing properties with new sewerage systems allowing them to connect to mains sewerage for the first time.

The completion of these schemes will help reduce pollution incidents, which were more prominent in certain areas of the region where private drainage systems were performing poorly.

The projects saw the installation of nine pumping stations, two new vacuum stations and over 70km of new pipes – enabling 534 homes* to connect to the main sewerage network in their area.

Investigations took place prior to the work starting and found that the old drainage systems were not working correctly. This posed a higher risk of pollutions – causing an increased threat to the local environment, especially during periods of heavy rainfall.

Chloe Bailey, Customer Experience Coordinator for the schemes said: “We’re delighted to have been able to deliver these projects for hundreds of customers. Things may not seem any different when they flush the toilet or use the shower, but this work will help protect the area from flooding and reduce the risk of pollutions in the future.

“But our work doesn’t stop here – as part of our next business plan, worth over £9bn in total – our proposal will see us invest over £100m into more schemes like this to connect more homes to our sewerage network.”

These schemes formed part of the company’s biggest ever programme of investment between 2020 – 2025. The water company’s business plan for 2025- 2030 is awaiting final sign off by the water regulator Ofwat later this year.
