With the support of the Environment Agency, we are using PerFormic Acid (PFA) as a disinfectant at our Southwold Water Recycling Centre (WRC). This was installed in 2019.

A first for the UK water industry, we invested £600,000 in trialling this innovative technology as a way of providing treated water with an additional layer of cleaning on site, before it is returned to the sea.

PFA is a biodegradable form of disinfection, most commonly used in medical fields and food industry. It’s important to note that using PFA does not introduce harmful by products into the natural environment.

Traditionally, ultraviolet (UV) light is used to disinfect water before it is returned to the sea, however, PFA offers the potential to provide a lower carbon and lower cost alternative.

Anglian Water’s Recreational Waters Technical Manager said:

“We’re the only UK water company to be using PFA chemical disinfection at a bathing water site and the initial results are promising. The Southwold Denes bathing water has improved from the Sufficient to Excellent classification since we began using it. While we know that other factors aside from treated water like urban runoff, dog fouling or the breakdown of organic matter could still impact on bathing water quality we are excited to see how PFA has performed so far with regards to our activity. The technology seems to have has helped secure bathing water improvements years earlier than would have otherwise been possible, and at a lower cost to the bill payer and with a lower carbon footprint too. We’re working with UK Water Industry Research (UKWIR) to undertake a broader study on the viral efficacy of the PFA treatment process. Our hope is that it will provide additional evidence to enable the roll out of PFA as a solution more widely in the future.”
